SDG "Clean Water and Sanitation"

The Wiesbaden answer in Hessisch: “Is uns nett worschtegal, was mittem Wasser is!”

What is this about and what does the SDG "Clean Water and Sanitation" mean for the event industry?

For the event sector, this means heightening awareness for the environmentally friendly use of water and sanitary facilities. Event organisers and service providers can contribute to the careful use of water resources by relying on water efficiency, environmentally friendly sanitation technologies and waste reduction. Monitoring water consumption, resource efficiency and the choice of sustainable event locations also contribute to achieving this goal. (tw-media.com (opens in a new tab))

With which immediate measures can event professionals start contributing to SDG 6?

  • Prioritise water efficiency: event venues should analyse water consumption and install efficient solutions such as water-saving, flow-restricting fittings, toilet flushing and watering systems, collect and use rainwater on roofs and solar-covered parking spaces.
  • Optimise sanitation technologies: install environmentally friendly sanitation solutions such as waterless urinals or dry toilets to reduce water consumption.
  • Collect and analyse data: monitor water consumption and discharge of wastewater to identify improvement potential. Wastewater heat, for example, can also be used for heat pumps.
  • Choose event locations based on sustainability: give preference to locations with a good water supply and adequate sanitary facilities. Prioritise locations that use rainwater for watering and toilet flushing

How do we implement this?

✓ Prioritising water efficiency:

  • The RMCC has a service water system with an external cistern and a capacity of 145 m³ of water. Rainwater is collected in the cistern, which is captured on the roof  of the south area and drained into the cistern through a filter. The rainwater is used for the toilet flushing, watering the grass squares in front of the house as well as for the water level in the three pools in front of the building.
  • The RMCC is fitted with toilets with water-saving function and automatic taps at the sinks.

✓ Using wastewater heat:

  • The RMCC has a wastewater heat pump. The heat produced in this way is fed into the heating cycle and used for the underfloor heating, for example.

✓ Waste management in the sanitary area:

  • Environmentally friendly sanitation technologies through the installation of towel dispensers in all sanitary areas of the RMCC as well as the offices to avoid paper towel waste.
