SDG "Affordable and Clean Energy"

The Wiesbaden answer in Hessisch: “De sauwersde schdroom eas der, den de schboarsd”

What is this about and what does the SDG "Affordable and Clean Energy" mean for the event industry?

For the event sector, this means that energy consumption has to be optimised and energy-efficient technologies used. The event industry is required to use renewable energies such as solar energy and wind power to increase the share of sustainable energy sources. (tw-media.com (opens in a new tab))

With which immediate measures can event professionals start contributing to SDG 7?

  • Perform an energy audit: energy audits document current energy consumption and identify the main drivers in event locations. Savings potential can thus be exploited if the main drivers are known.
    Convert to renewable energies
  • Installation and use of solar energy
  • Use of energy-efficient lighting and technology such as LED lighting
  • Choose sustainable event venues for your own event: event organisers should inform themselves about the energy balance, CO2 audits, environmentally friendly infrastructure and the use of renewable energies for potential event venues and consider this when planning the event.

How do we implement this?

✓ Use of electricity from renewable energies:

  • WICM GmbH uses electricity from renewable energies in the RMCC, the Kurhaus, in the Jagdschloss Platte and in the additional company offices.

✓ Use of energy-saving LED technology at the event venues

✓ Photovoltaic energy:

  • A 1.200 m² photovoltaic system with 200 kWp for generating basic power is located on the roof of the RMCC. Approx. 130-140 tonnes of CO2 emissions are thus saved every year. Surplus energy that is not consumed by the RMCC is fed into the general power grid.

✓ Use of district heating:

  • Peak loads in the RMCC are covered by district heating from a biomass thermal power plant.

✓ Energy-optimised air-conditioning and heating technology

✓ Insulation:

  • Low heat consumption thanks to heat insulation and multiply glazed windows.

✓ Use of natural light:

  • Low power consumption for lighting thanks to the use of daylight. Daylight in almost all conference rooms in the RMCC; 90% of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum daylight.

✓ Monitoring:

✓ Consistently switching off unused devices/lighting

  • Furthermore, we set an example for the conscious use of energy resources with our annual participation in the Earth Hour at our event locations.
