The Rheingau area around Wiesbaden is famous for its Riesling wine which is produced everywhere in the rich wine area.
In the United States Riesling is often known as "Johannisberg Riesling", a term derived from the Johannisberg vineyard close to Wiesbaden, which is one of the oldest surviving Riesling vineyards in the world. It can be grown and produced in several varieties such as Winzersekt (winegrower´s sparkling wine), Spätlese (late harvest), ice wine, the semi-dry type or the sweet treasures.
The Rheingau offers an ideal environment for the Riesling to grow. The slopes of the Rheingau are perfectly located to the south and therefore blessed with lots of hours of sunshine a year. On the other side, the Taunus Mountains protect the vineyards against the cold and also heavy rainfalls.
But not only is the Rheingau region famous for its Riesling. This historic area is also armed with several old monasteries and castles, wine villages with seasonal vintners wine bars and further historic attractions such as the wine loading crane in Oestrich.
A great combination between wine and festivals offer the several festivities that take place in and around Wiesbaden such as the Rheingau Music Festival every year in summer.
