The varied flora and fauna of the region can be explored in many ways. Whether on foot, on hiking tours on one of the many wine and nature trails or from the water on board one of the tour steamers which regularly travel up and down, everyone can indulge in the nature experience in their own way.
One particular highlight is undoubtedly the trip up to the Niederwald Monument which can be reached from Rüdesheim am Rhein with a cable car and from Assmannshausen with a chairlift. This statue of the Germania, build between 1877 and 1883 to mark the resurrection of the German Empire after the German-French war, reigns majestically on its plinth high above the city of Rüdesheim am Rhein.
From here, visitors are rewarded with a fantastic view. Very close to the statue, in the Niederwald, is the eagle sanctuary "Adlerwarte Niederwald". Here, eagles and other birds of prey can be observed at close quarters.
Rest and relaxation after the impressions and experiences of an "active Rheingau day" are offered by numerous facilities of the spa towns in the Taunus region which have devoted themselves to the health and wellness needs of their guests. The stylish atmosphere of the traditional baths for instance, which are equipped with all modern technology and offer various indulgence programmes, are ideal for relaxation and regeneration.
