Schierstein is a popular tourist destination thanks to its Mediterranean flair and harbour. Also wine growing, mentioned in 973 in a document for the first time, is very important in this wine village. A great variety of different white wines, (Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Chardonnay and Silvaner) and red wines (Pinot noir, Dornfelder, Saint Laurent and Merlot) are cultivated on a wine-growing area of 39.2 hectares. The wines from the Schiersteiner Hölle can be tasted at the weekends (April until October) at the wine stall on the Hans-Römer Platz.
Schiersteiner Hölle
The terroir name is derived from the German word for a stockpile of minerals halde. The soils are medium to deep loess soils on Pliocene and Pleistocene gravels and sands, partly also alluvial soils. The wines demonstrate a mineral acidy texture and a vegetal bouquet. They are closed and develop their complexity after aging for a certain period.
